Thanks

Greetings from the UNDP Regional Centres in Bangkok and Colombo!

We are pleased to inform you we are now rolling out the “2007 South East and East Asia Sub-Regional Leadership Course for Young Leaders in Governance”, the third sub-regional offering of the course following the success of the leadership courses in Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Colombo in 2005 and 2006. With fresh funding from the UN Democracy Fund, this is a continuation of the leadership development initiative of the Regional Centre in Bangkok and the Regional Centre in Colombo through Capacity2015 Asia, the Asia Regional Governance Programme (ARGP), the Asia Pacific Gender Mainstreaming Programme (APGMP), and the Regional Indigenous Peoples’ Programme (RIPP). and Building on the successful regional and sub-regional courses, a number of our Leadership Fellows have been trained to serve as resource persons/trainers in 2007 and 2008 rollouts.

This sub-regional course will focus on your host countries – Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam – and will take place from 17-22 September 2007 in Lao PDR. It aims to strengthen capacities of young leaders in governance, in recognition of their role as powerful agents for change. The training curriculum will utilize LEAD International’s tested leadership skills modules that UNDP RCB developed and deployed, together with LEAD, in previous courses. This course will also feature leadership values modules on anti-corruption, gender, indigenous peoples, and capacity development approaches and tools.

The training course has been developed for young leaders working in government (e.g., young parliamentarians, young civil servants, young elected representatives in local governments, etc.) and in areas that support good governance (e.g., young lawyers, young media/arts/communications persons whose work highlight governance issues, young NGO leaders whose focus of work pertains to governance, young university professors, and young business leaders, among others). We would like to seek your nomination of up to two potential participants from your respective countries, by Wednesday, 15 August 2007. Please note that the course will only support the participation of a total of 20 participants from all the 10 countries. The nominees will be accepted based on the following criteria:

o Between 25 to 35 years of age;

o Proven track record and active participation in leadership and/or governance issues in their respective countries and/or the region;

o Willingness and commitment to take and apply the leadership skills to be learned during the training;

o Have exhibited a sphere of influence in their respective areas to make a difference; and

o Have working knowledge of the English language.

In addition to country participants and in response to interest from CO staff to participate in the course, we are allocating five (5) slots for UNDP staff, and another five (5) slots for national UNV staff, and therefore seek your nominations as well. We are encouraging UNDP COs to financially support the participation of staff nominated and accepted for the course.

Gender balance and representation of indigenous peoples will be actively sought in identifying participants. Please note that we are also allowing nominations from your partner organizations (NGOs, CSOs, indigenous organizations). Nominations will not automatically mean acceptance to the course, as we will have a screening committee to review nominations against the above-indicated criteria.

Enclosed for your information and reference is a brief background document on this event, the tentative course design, and the application form. We would be grateful for a wide circulation of this invitation.

If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact: Robert (Bob) Bernardo, UNDP Regional Centre Bangkok (RCB), at robert.g.bernardo@undp.org.

With best regards,
